Baixa Limia – Serra do Xurés Natural Park (Interpretation Center)
Within the network of natural parks in Galicia, one of the most unknown but at the same time best preserved is the Natural Park of Baixa Limia – Serra do Xurés, bordering the Portuguese National Park of Peneda-Gerês and forming with it the “Gerês-Xurés” Cross-border Biosphere Reserve (RBTGX) On the Galician side, it comprises 30,000 hectares of protected landscape since 1993, which combines rugged and gentle mountains with an average altitude of over 1000 meters.
It has its headquarters, which serves as an interpretation center, in the town of Lobios, the ideal place to start our visit. Here we can access a lot of information about the park’s resources, as well as obtain material to carry out some of the many trails to discover this gem of Galician geography. The building has an information reception, explanatory panels, a projection room, models and a workshop area.
Having chosen some of the many walking routes prepared to get to know the reality of this rural area up close, we come across granite bowling alleys, waterfalls, and also the landmarks that marked the 300 km that separated Braga from Astorga in Roman times (Via Nova) to see very striking birds (real eagle or partridge), mammals such as the Cachena cow, the Galician-Portuguese horse, the roe deer, the deer or the wild goat.
