Ecovia do Lima

Ecovia do Lima

The Ecovia do Lima is an ideal route for walking or cycling (there is also a section adapted for horses) that connects the municipalities of Viana do Castelo, Ponte de Lima, Ponte da Barca and Arcos de Valdevez on both banks of the Lima River. It has 5 different sections: Açudes, between Ponte de Lima and Ponte da Barca (14km); Laranja, between Ermelo and Albufeira de Touvedo (a plain reaching the Roman bridge); Lagoas, from the Roman bridge to the protected landscape of Bertiandos Lagoons; Veigas, with 13 km between Deão (Viana do Castelo) and Ponte de Lima (Avda. Dos Plátanos); and that of Refoios, 5km between the medieval bridge of Ponte de Lima and Refoios do Lima, on the north bank of the river. Work is in progress on section 6, that of Jolda de São Paio.

In total, there are dozens of kilometers included in the SCI Lima (Natura 2000 Network), which can be continued by another Ecovia, that from Vez river, towards Arcos de Valdevez and Sistelo. Ecovia is a good way to show the landscape and natural values associated with the Lima River, as well as the activities of the primary sector and the various elements of the historical and cultural heritage (mills, lagoons and bridges).

Ponte da Barca, Ponte de Lima, Arcos de Valdevez and Viana do Castelo are the four municipalities connected by the great route along the river. Many abandoned paths were thus recovered for a balanced use that makes it possible to reconcile sport, tourism, human life and natural environment.
