What was once a unique mountain village has now become one of the most important sports centers in the Province of Ourense. Located in the heart of the village itself, there is a sports activities center that makes its facilities available to athletes, clubs, federations or associations so that they can develop their different sports at the foot of the mountain, also functioning as a mountain biking centre.

Right at the gates of the Gerês-Xurés Transfrontier Biosphere Reserve (RBTGX), and with the Portuguese border in the background, this village got a curious toponym, possibly derived from the Latin “manus”, or “dead hands”, those Church patrimonial protection of the monarchy in the Ancien Régime is home to an old necropolis on the banks of the Salas dam.

Maus de salas has several points of interest. One of them is the parish church of Santa Baia das Maus de Salas, with typical religious architecture from rural Galicia. Inside, there is a unique altarpiece, with a sculpture in relief that stands out above the others (the Good Shepherd). Another notable element of the village is the cross. On the other hand, at the entrance to the village, there is a model with the “Mamoas do Vale da Morte”. Stone houses, fountains and barns, feed the image of a village with a lot of history.
