Castro Leboreiro walking trail
Castro Leboreiro walking trail

Starting at Outeiro de Águas or in the village of A Fraga, the route crosses the dividing line between Spain and Portugal, visiting one of the largest megalithic necropolis in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. The main route does not exceed 12km. However, you can adjust the distance and difficulty of the route according to your needs.
The circular route crosses the plateau and discovers the source of the Castro de Laboreiro River. At the beginning, you cross the plateau, and the path is not very difficult. Already at the geodesic point of Meda, placed on a mound, we begin to guess the importance of this mountain in terms of Neolithic funerary constructions. From Meda, we head towards the “Corga do Gato” and “Corga do Val das Antas” (source of the Laboreiro River), then reaching the top of A Gestosa/Xestosa and the Portuguese village of Rodeiro; the path continues towards Portela de Pau and the top of A Penagache, in the north, in the municipality of Quintela de Leirado. Point where we can see the Pena de Anamán, the Castle of Castro Laboreiro and its mountains; Serra da Peneda and Serra do Gerês, further south.
In the village of Castro Laboreiro, belonging to the Melgaço Chamber, we can enjoy the gastronomy (goat), the aforementioned castle or the company of the dog “do castro”, an autochthonous species, protected and traditionally dedicated to the care of herds of cattle.
The descent is made through a path between pine trees to shelter from the sun. After climbing the Outeiro de Mós, the route ends again at the village of A Fraga, with its fountains and one of the oldest granaries in Galicia.
